Reece's Birth Story

I went to triage at the hospital b/c I had been having contractions, nausea, and diarrhea since Saturday (May 5th) and that morning I had bright pink discharge in my underwear.  At my past two week appts my gyno said I was 100% effaced and 1 cm dilated and that she was dropping and she could feel her head.  Well once they put me in a room, they hooked me up to the fetal monitor and her heartbeat was doing fine.  They checked my blood pressure and it was high, so that was a concern.  My gyno had been concerned about preeclampsia for a while due to my swelling and my high blood pressure and at times there was protein in my urine.  They also checked to see if I was leaking amniotic fluid, but the test came back negative.  They called my gyno to see if she wanted to do anything else and she ordered a high risk ultrasound to check on Reece and see what was going on in there.
Mike made it to the hospital right before I went in for the high risk ultrasound, thank God!  While we were in there, she measured Reece's head, thigh bone, arm bone, and checked for a lot of other things going on in there.  When she finished, she said Reece looked good except that her left kidney was dilated so it was going to needed to be checked with another ultrasound after she was born.  She then said my amniotic fluid was low, which Mike and I had no clue what that meant since I was 38 wks along and getting close to delivery.  We then asked and she said in a nonchalant way, "Oh that means you're going to have to deliver her today."  Mike and I looked at each other completely shocked and a bit panicked just b/c that was totally out of left field and we weren't expecting those words to come out of her mouth.  They then wheeled me back to my triage room to get me ready for my labor and delivery room.  While they were doing that, my gyno called me to see how I was doing and let me know what was going on.  I told her I was freaking out a bit b/c I was wanting to start my labor on my own when Reece and I were ready and do most of our labor at home and have some time to mentally prepare that it was go time.  She then explained that since the amniotic fluid was low, there was a risk of Reece's umbilical cord wrapping around her neck or collapsing, which is why they were going to induce.  She also explained that the placenta wasn't doing its job anymore and Reece's left kidney was dilated so those were two other reasons to be induced.  I then asked if I could go home with Mike so we could just have one car at the hospital and get our bags, let our dogs out, and prepare the house for us being gone for a few days.  She said no b/c they had to monitor Reece and me the whole time.
Mike and I then began calling people.  Mike headed home to let the dogs out, get our bags, change out of his work clothes, and get the house ready.  I called my parents to let them know what was going on since I had been keeping them updated.  My parents were so upset b/c their AC had just broken that morning and Kyle and Sofia had just gotten into Kingwood b/c they were leaving for Puerto Rico Saturday morning on a plan out of IAH at 0500 hrs so my parents were driving them.  My Aunt Liz ended up driving my mom up here so they could be here for the birth of Reece and be here for Mike and I, which was AMAZING!!  They ended up coming in the room once they got there and my contractions weren't bad to say hi and see if we needed anything.  They then went to our house to sleep and take care of the dogs before the big show started.  My dad stayed at home to be there for the AC getting repaired and taking Kyle to the airport.  He was so sad, but my mom kept him updated and sent him pictures as soon as she was born :)  Once they wheeled me into the labor and delivery room, I asked the doctor if they could hold off on the pitocin drip until Mike got back to the hospital, but they could only wait so long, so they ended up starting it at 1700 hrs.  Mike arrived back at the hospital about 20 min after they had started the pitocin.  Josh drove him up to the hospital so we would have one car and Dani went to the house to play with the puppies and stay with them for a bit b/c they were so confused.
The contractions weren't bad for a while, but I wasn't dilating at all.  At 0030 hrs, Dr. England came in to check me and he ended up breaking my water to try to move things along a bit quicker.  That was a weird feeling!  And it wasn't the most convenient thing either since I wanted to move around the room and use a birthing ball during the more intense labor haha.  Once my water broke the contractions began to get stronger and stronger.  Let me just say, I woke up at 0545 hrs Friday morning for work and I hadn't eaten anything since 1145 hrs at lunch while I was at work.  So I was running on empty stomach wise and getting really tired the later it got.  When the labor was getting more intense, my body didn't react the best way.  I was using the birthing ball, walking around with my pitocin drip, squatting, etc to try and offset the pain I was feeling.  Mike was helping me try to relax and breathe along with helping me do everything I was wanting to do to offset the pain.  He did AMAZING!  Well due to the no sleep, no food, and pain of labor, I started throwing up and having diarrhea all while having contractions.  In other words, YUCK AND PAIN!  It was honestly absolutely terrible!  I was handling it and dealing with it for a while, but once my body started shaking, I knew it was shutting down.  When I'm sick and have those symptoms, once I start shaking, that is the time I need to take a nap or try and eat something b/c I don't have any oomph left.  To add to all that, my blood pressure was high so they were putting me on oxygen on and off and it was causing her to be under stress.  She was also sleeping during my contractions, which meant she wasn't working with them.  So, bottom line, I was still at 1cm at 0330 hrs.  Mike and I talked and we decided we should do the epidural.  The nurse had suggested it to lower my blood pressure and help me dilate, but we had turned it down.  She also said that if my blood pressure didn't go down, they would have to put me on magnesium sulfate, which meant I would have to be in the labor and delivery room an extra 24 hrs, so that was not an option in our minds.
I couldn't take being sick and having the intense contractions anymore and I was worried about Reece with my blood pressure and her being under stress.  At 0330 hrs, the epidural man came in and gave me the epidural.  I honestly thought the "drill bit" as Mike called it would hurt a lot worse, but it wasn't bad at all.  The lidocaine shot stung and I unarched my back when it went in, but I went right back to an arch for him to insert the catheter for the epidural.  Once it was all done, they checked me at 0350 hrs and I was at 5 cm.  Woohoo!  At 0415 hrs, I told Mike I had the urge to push and he went and got the nurse.  She said, "Well, I'll go ahead and check you again to see where we're at."  She looked at me surprised and said, "Well no wonder you have the urge to push!  You're at 10 cm girl!"  Mike and I were so happy!  We were ready to meet our little girl and wanted to get this thing done!  But to our surprise, we had to wait for the on call doctor to get there!  It took forever!  He was 20 min off once they finally got a hold of him after 3 phone calls.  Then once he finally got there it took him a few to get ready.  So Mike and I estimated that I had to hold off pushing for over 30 min, which sucked!  I did NOT like that at all!  Once he finally got in there, he had me push once to see where I was and then he left.  I pushed for 50 min and the nurse called the doctor to tell him I might need some help (an episiotomy) since Reece wasn't turning and I was running out of energy.  I literally was falling asleep in between pushes and I was back on oxygen b/c Reece wasn't getting enough.  He told her he knew I could do it so I kept pushing.  About 5 min later, Reece started crowning!  What an amazing feeling!  The epidural hadn't fully kicked in and I was able to feel pretty much everything down there.  It was great!  Well, it was great when I was thinking, Oh wow, she's crowning, she's almost here, but that went away when I was told, "Hold on!  Hold on!  Don't push!  Wait until the doctor gets here!"  Well, after waiting as long as I could, I told the nurse she was going to have to deliver Reece b/c I wasn't waiting anymore.  My body was taking over and I felt Reece come out into the world!  Mike later told me that no one caught her, but the nurses scooped her up right away and we heard the cries :)
Reece Bella Bassi was born on May 12th at 0606 hrs weighing 6 lbs 2 oz and a length of 18.9 in :)  Mike and I were absolutely ecstatic that our little girl had arrived!  My mom, Aunt Liz, Jim, and Taryn all came in to see us and meet our new addition to the family.  We stayed in the labor and delivery room for 2 hrs and then they moved us upstairs to our postpartum room.  Reece stayed awake almost the whole day and we had some more visitors throughout the day :)  We were able to leave the hospital on May 14th once she wasn't in the high risk category for her jaundice.  Pictures will be coming soon :)

Reece's Stuff is All Ready!

Reece's Pac n Play set up in our room.  It has the diaper stacker, changing table, and napper with it so she can sleep in our room for the first week or two.  It's the Graco Lowery addition so it's green, brown, tan, and blue, which is nice and neutral :)
Reece's room from the door.  On the right corner is her changing table, on the left corner his her crib, and on the right side of the bed is her dresser.  We decided to leave the bed in her room for nights when I'm pooped and want to just take a nap or just sleep for a few hours in her room instead of waking up Mike all the time.
Her changing table with diaper genie and bookshelf.
Her crib with her corner desk.  There's a tv and dvd player on there for movies and music :)
Her changing pad complete with frog cover.  Love the frog theme!
Her bedding in her crib.  Good ole frogs with neutral colors :)
 Thomas Kinkade Peter Pan plate....
 Cinderella....
 Pinnochio....
 Snow White
Graco Lowery Travel System.  In other words, it's her car seat in her stroller.
Her car seat solo.  I finally set up the car seat base and put her car seat in the expedition the other day since my gyno said I probably should haha.
 Her stroller solo.
 Her Graco Lowery DuoDiner highchair.
And her super adorable Fisher Price swing with fish, turtles, penguins, and polar bears :)

Random Pictures That I Haven't Posted on Here Yet

I'm 30 wks along in this one.  This was taken at Katie's baby shower (long dress).  She's having twin boys and due on June 7th.  Jill (white shirt) is pregnant with a little girl and she's due on June 3rd.  I have no idea who the other girl is.  Katie and Jill are married to two guys I was in the police academy with.  It's exciting we're all able to share this experience together!
I'm 33 wks along in this one.  This was taken at Jill's (blue long dress) baby shower.  Taryn is holding her 8 month old Wyatt, Katie is holding her 8 month old Cole, then there's me, Jill, and Katie.  Taryn and I have been best friends since 5th grade and the other girls are wives of guys I went to the police academy with.
This picture absolutely cracks me up.  I woke up one morning and reached my hand out to pet whatever dog I thought was next to me.  Well I felt a head and then a back leg, which I thought was weird.  When I crawled out of bed, I saw how they were laying, and I had to take a picture!  Hilarious!  I love these two dogs so much and can't wait for Reece to meet them!
I'm 31 wks along with two of my cousins.  Randy (with the dreads) was in town from Colorado so we were so psyched to see him!  And Josh (Yankees apparel) lives in Plano.  Randy is two years older than me and Josh is four years younger than me.  Mike and I met them at Abuelo's in Hurst for a super yummy lunch.  I can't wait for Reece to meet her cousins and they can't wait to meet her!  They were actually able to feel her moving around while we were hanging out :)
I absolutely LOVE this picture of Lindsey and I!  Lindsey is 39 wks along with her second little girl and I'm 34 wks along.  We actually took this picture the Thursday before she had Evelyn (her little girl) the day of my baby shower.  The big joke was she was going to go into labor at the baby shower and we were all going to drive her to the hospital, but she ended up going into labor that morning (0230 water broke) and had Evelyn at 0721.  Lindsey and Eric's first little girl, Lucia, is 1 yr 4 mo and she's our god daughter.  Lindsey and I work on the police department together.  We were actually out back behind the Police Officer's Association building when we took this picture haha.  Oh and I had my boot on from my stress fracture :)-

Reece has Dropped!

I woke up the other morning and when I got out of bed, it felt like Reece was skydiving in my belly and landed a lot lower than where she had been before.  I told Mike I thought she had dropped a bit, but neither one of us could officially tell by looking so we didn't really think anything of it at the time.  Well later that day, I noticed that I was feeling her move around in my hip area and that she couldn't implant herself in my ribs anymore!  Yay!  That was my official sign she had dropped!  She was enjoying implanting herself on my right side under my ribs, which was super uncomfortable, especially when I was trying to lean over to do anything.  Then again, like everyone said, she's already learning to be a stubborn pain lol!  If she's anything like her mommy and daddy, she's definitely going to be stubborn and hard headed :)-
Well today I had my 36 wk check up and I told my gyno about all of it so the lovely words, "get undressed from the waist down" were spoken.  She measured me and said Reece has definitely dropped a lot since last week, which is a good sign.  We then listened to her heart beat, which sounded nice and strong.  Then we moved onto the checking of the cervix lol!  She said that I'm still closed, but it feels like it's on the verge of being at a 1.  I know none of this really means anything, but when you're ready to get the her out and meet her, all of this sounds positive for that happening sooner rather than later haha.
And on another positive note, Mike and I took our childbirth class on Saturday.  It was an all day thing since we couldn't do Monday and Wednesday nights due to him having class.  It was up at Baylor All Saints where we're going to have Reece so we were able to do a tour of labor and delivery and postpartum.  The class was very interesting and we both enjoyed it.  We bought the book Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way a while ago and we've read it, so this reaffirmed a lot of stuff we had read in the book.  It was also great watching the videos b/c it made me a whole lot more comfortable with having a no drug natural childbirth.  It actually made Mike more comfortable as well, thank goodness.  He was wanting an epidural b/c he doesn't want to see me in that much pain, but once he saw the other women having a natural versus the epidural, he's thinking the natural is better.  I guess that's all the latest stuff that's been going on so enjoy!

The Official Full Name!

Well Mike and I were running errands today and we officially decided on Reece's middle name.....Bella!  Yay!  Reece Bella Bassi is the full name of our little girl that will be joining us very soon :)
The full story of the name stuff is a long one, but I'll lay some of it out on here.  When we finally found out we were pregnant, I told Mike my dream name for a little girl, Riann Aurora, but he hated it.  My next choice was Aurora Riann, but he hated that as well.  With Riann as her first name, we could call her Ri for short and Aurora as her first name we could call her Rory for short.  He nixed both of the names immediately for the girl names so we had to start from square one.  Well the further along I got, the more people were saying that it was going to be a little boy.  We agreed on the name, Bryce Luca Bassi, for a boy's name.  Bryce-Scottish; freckled, Luca-Italian; light.  So we were set on a boy's name.
The girls names on the other hand were a completely different story.  We ended up buying a baby name book to help us decide on a girls name.  Well after going through, which seems like, 100's of names, we finally agreed on Reece as her first name.  We absolutely love what it means, passionate and enthusiastic, and it seems like it's fitting her the way she kicks the crap out of me in my belly haha.  We then were a bit worried b/c once we picked it, we realized one of the many nieces and nephews on Mike's side of the family had that name as her middle name.  We talked about it and asked for some opinions and everyone said that us making our little girl's name Reece for her first name was not a big deal since it was the other little girl's middle name.  So we decided on Reece :)
When it came to the middle name, I had thrown in Baylee, Ember, Riley, Fallon, a lot of other choices b/c I wanted her to have a name from our backgrounds (Italian, Scottish, Irish).  Well every name I threw out there, Mike hated and would come back with Brittany, Tiffany, Jennifer, etc.  A typical girls name, which wasn't okay with me.  So needless to say, we went back and forth for a very long time trying to decide.  Well I ended up writing down every Italian female name in our baby name book, which was 4 pages long, and told him he could pick one of those names since I really had my heart set on her having an Italian middle name.  Well he looked through all of them and didn't like any besides Bella and Rosa.  I loved Bella, but then he remembered that one of Aunt Karen and Uncle Frank's dogs names was Bella so he said no way b/c she would be named after a dog.  Everyone told him that she wouldn't be named after a dog and it would be fine if her middle name was Bella, but he wouldn't budge.  Well with Rosa, in Italy, it's in the top 5 most popular female Italian names, but here in Texas, it sounds Mexican, so we nixed that one.  He then liked Bellarose, which is Italian and was fine with me, but he then decided that it was too names and too long, so that was out.  Some other names from the list that I liked were, Abree, Abrielle, Arabella, Sienna, Mirabella, Cella, and Giada.  Well Mike said no to all of them, so we kept coming back to Bella since that was the main one he liked, but he couldn't get passed the dog thing.
After several months of me bugging him and telling him he needed to decide, we finally decided today!  We were driving home from Costco and I went ahead and brought up middle names.  I kept the list of them in my purse at all times lol!  He said that was the one name we both really liked and we agreed on it!  So, yay!  Reece Bella Bassi is our little girl's name!

Well, one of my bestest friends, Lindsey, was due April 20th with her second little girl, and we kept joking around she would go into labor at the baby shower and we would all drive her to the hospital.  She was texting me for a long time Friday night that she felt like she was going to go into labor and I just kept telling her to breathe and relax and all would be well.  It turned out, her water broke at 0230, she rushed to the hospital, she was dilated to an 8, and she had this beautiful baby girl (Evelyn Sean Stooksberry) at 0721 hrs weighing 7lbs6oz and 19 in long!  Well I almost rushed up there, but she told me to relax and enjoy the baby shower and then to head up there afterwards.  My mom, me, and Aunt Liz headed up to Baylor All Saints and went to celebrate the new arrival :)  Love them!
Back to the baby shower...so sorry for the order being messed up!  MaryPat is in the background, Sofia, Lexi, Jan, Heather, and Kristin are all waiting patiently while I'm cutting pieces of cake

What a blast!  My mom and dad came in Thursday evening and as soon as I got home from work, they took me shopping for nursing tops.  I've still been wearing my regular clothes and, well, the top half of my body has grown quite a bit so my parents and Mike say I'm stretching out all my tops haha.  We headed to Target and they got me a few nursing tanks and a couple maternity shirts :)  I felt like a little kid again, which was fun having my parents spoil me :)  When we got home, we just hung out until Mike called to let us know he was on his way home so we could start dinner.  My mom made a super yummy mexican dish for dinner and then even yummier vanilla cream filled chocolate cupcakes for dessert.
Friday Mike and I headed to work and my parents were absolutely amazing and cleaned the house for the shower on Saturday.  I only had time for and felt up to dusting Wednesday when I got home from work, but I couldn't get myself to vacuum.  And when Mike had time, he worked on mowing and weedeating the yard before the shower.  My parents did an amazing job cleaning the house and Mike and I were sooo grateful that they did that!  Friday evening, Nanny and Aunt Liz came in from Kingwood and Kyle and Sofia came in from San Marcos.  Once Mike got home, we all headed to Babe's Chicken House in downtown Burleson for dinner and it was soo good!  I love their green beans and cream of corn!  And their smoked chicken and chicken fingers with BBQ sauce are amazing!  Yum yum yum!  We then headed back to the house and all hung out for a bit before Aunt Liz and Nanny headed to their hotel.  They decided to stay at a hotel b/c Aunt Liz is allergic to dogs and she has really bad asthma so she was concerned she wasn't going to be able to be at the house during the whole shower if she stayed the night.
Saturday morning, I was woken up to a picture text message that won't come through on my phone from Sgt. Keenum (was my Cpl in Central ZT and now he's Lindsey's Sgt).  I immediately jumped out of bed and called him b/c I knew it had something to do with Lindsey and her baby girl.  He told me that she and her new baby girl were doing just fine!  He handed the phone to Lindsey and she told me everything!  I couldn't believe it!  I was so excited and happy and had all these good emotions running through me!  Real quick, Lindsey's husband, Eric, is a US Air Marshall and he lives in Virginia while she lives here.  They have one little girl together, Lucia, Mike and I's god daughter.  Since Lindsey was due April 20th, Eric was flying in Monday morning, the 16th.  Well, unfortunately, Eric wasn't here for the big moment since he was on a flight to Paris while it all happened.  So since Eric wasn't here, Lindsey called Keenum to drive her to the hospital since he was the closest to her (she's in Springtown).  He rushed her to the hospital and one of her sisters met them there.  All went well and out popped their baby girl!  So I had all this going on early Saturday morning and it started my day off AWESOME!  Not only was my family there and I knew I was going to see many of my friends and family to celebrate Reece, but Lindsey and her baby girl were doing great!  I ran around the house telling everyone :)  The baby shower was an absolute blast and Mike and I feel soo blessed and grateful for all the amazing gifts we got for Reece :)  Reece's room is now complete and it's great!  Afterwards, we went to see Lindsey and Evelyn at the hospital before we headed to dinner.  I absolutely lllooovvvveeee family time and I got so much of it Saturday!  It seriously was such a good day I couldn't stop smiling and laughing and just being overall ecstatic all day and night :)
I woke up Sunday feeling good and refreshed, but it is always a sad day b/c everyone heads back home :(  My dad made everyone a big breakfast and my mom washed all the towels and sheets they used plus all the new clothes, towels, blankets, etc that Reece got at her shower the day before.  Wow, that definitely helped me sooo much!  Aunt Liz and Nanny left first due to the weather, then Kyle and Sofia b/c Kyle has a big paper due tomorrow, and then my parents and Koda.  Everyone made it home safely, thank God!  Mike and I did some things around the house with Reece's room and the gifts and then he went to the office to work.  Altogether, this weekend was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING AND I LOVE MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS SOO MUCH!
